TURLOCK, CA – Today, Paul Danbom, Democratic candidate for California’s 5th Congressional District, announced he is officially withdrawing his candidacy for the 2026 election. In a move designed to consolidate Democratic support, Danbom formally endorsed fellow Democrat Michael Masuda to challenge incumbent Tom McClintock.
“After deep reflection and conversations with my family and supporters, I have decided that the best way to serve the people of the 5th District is to ensure we have a unified front heading into the primary,” said Danbom. “Our district has been overlooked for too long, and we cannot afford a fractured vote if we intend to bring real leadership back to our community.”
Danbom cited Masuda’s background, campaign momentum, and shared policy goals; including expanding rural healthcare and protecting California’s water rights as the primary reasons for his endorsement.
“Michael Masuda has the integrity and the organization needed to take this fight to the general election,” Danbom continued. “I am proud to offer him my full support and urge my supporters to join me in helping him win this seat.”
Michael Masuda welcomed the endorsement, stating, “Paul Danbom has been a class act throughout this campaign. His commitment to the Central Valley and the foothills is undeniable, and I am honored to have his trust as we work to build a district that works for everyone.”
The Danbom campaign will begin the process of winding down operations effective immediately.
